What Is Melasma?
Melasma is a skin condition that causes dark, discolored patches of skin to appear around the cheeks, forehead, chin, and bridge of the nose. Also known commonly as the mask of pregnancy, melasma is most commonly found in women who have experienced intense hormonal changes, such as the changes brought on by oral birth control methods, pregnancy, and childbirth. While melasma isn’t painful or harmful to have, many of our patients are unhappy with the way it looks.
What Causes Melasma?
Research has shown the two most common causes of melasma include hormonal changes and excess exposure to the sun. Women who are sensitive to estrogen and progesterone may find their melasma appeared following the use of birth control pills, pregnancy, or hormone replacement therapy. Other patients who have a history of sun exposure without protection have also seen the development of melasma over the years. Melasma is most common in patients with sensitivity to hormones and who have deeper skin tones and darker features.
