What Are Skin Cysts?
A cyst is simply a sac that fills with fluid, air, or other substances under the surface of the skin. Cysts can appear anywhere on and in the body, from small cystic acne spots on the face to larger, internal cysts in the breasts or ovaries.
What Causes Cysts?
Cysts are common occurrences in the skin and body that are typically caused by infection, inflammation, inherited disease, or the blockage of ducts. Cysts like ingrown hairs and acne are typically caused by the blockage of hair follicles and pores. The cause of each cyst can be completely different but treating them before they cause further discomfort is vital. We encourage all of our patients to get their cysts evaluated by Dr. Armstrong’s medical team members. They’ll be happy to go over your treatment options with you and get you back to living comfortably with blemish-free skin.
What Cyst Treatments Are Available?
Dr. Jennifer Armstrong’s expert medical team members are proud to offer the following cyst treatments to men and women:
Draining
If your cyst is filled with fluid or other harmless material, we may recommend draining your cyst for temporary relief. This procedure involves using a very thin syringe to remove the fluid build-up in the cyst, requiring no downtime or recovery after treatment.
Surgical Removal
If you find that your cyst is refilling with fluid or material following drainage, surgical removal of the cyst may be recommended. This surgical removal requires one of our medical team members to make a small incision at the site of the cyst and remove the entire sac. While this treatment option does require more downtime than drainage, patients can have the peace of mind that their cyst will not come back.
